Homecraft Message

As the Ancaster Agricultural Society Homecraft President and on behalf of the Homecraft Department, I welcome everyone to the 173rd year of the Ancaster Fall Fair. This year promises to be an excellent year for the Ancaster Fair.

Enter your Art, crafts, knitting, crocheting, canning, baking, sewing, etc. You get the idea, anything you have been working on. Check the prize book for a category, and if we don’t have what you want this year, ask us, and maybe we can include it next year. Come into Marritt Hall and see all of your entries displayed, as well as those of your friends and neighbours. Something new this year in Marritt Hall, Selfie Stations! Come and check them out and share your pictures on your social media.

There is much to see and do at the Ancaster Fair, exhibits to visit and live demonstrators to watch and learn from in Marritt Hall. Out on the grounds are entertainers, Heritage Square with its vintage and antique vehicles and farm machinery, livestock shows, the midway and, of course, the great food.

I invite you all to come out, enjoy a day at the fair, and meet up with your friends and family.

Canadian Horse

The Government of Canada has officially recognized the Canadian Horse as a national symbol and an important part of our heritage.

The Canadian horse was developed from equine sent from France to Quebec between 1665 and 1670. The limited number of horses in the colony made them highly valued, and geographical isolation meant that the stock remained pure.
Over the next century, natural and human selection molded a rugged and versatile breed that’s strong, dashing, and quick. The Canadian was used for farm work, transport, riding, and racing, earning the nickname “little iron horse.” Canadian horses could excel at any task they were put to.

The market for Canadian horses was strong throughout the 1800s, and thousands of horses were exported from Canada to the U.S. Many of them became cavalry horses and were killed in the Civil War. So many horses were exported or lost that by 1880, the breed was nearly extinct in Canada. In 1886, a small group of breeders in Quebec formed a studbook for the Canadian horse.

The Canadian stands 14 to 16 hands (56-64") at the withers and weighs 900 to 1000 pounds. Canadian horses are solid and well-muscled, with a well-arched neck set high on a long, sloping shoulder. The overall impression is one of a round, sturdy, and well-balanced horse. Canadians are primarily black or bay, with full manes and tails. They are energetic without being nervous and, as appropriate to their heritage, versatile and adaptable for a variety of riding and driving disciplines

Jessica Ferguson
Ancaster Fair Ambassador

Hello everyone, what an interesting past few years it has been. There have been several different challenges for us all. The Ancaster Agricultural Society is glad to be welcoming back the community for the 173rd Ancaster Fall Fair. My name is Jessica Ferguson, and I am so excited to represent the Ancaster Agriculture Society as the 2023 Fair Ambassador. Without our many volunteers, members and exhibitors who work so hard throughout the year, the Ancaster Fair would not be what it is today, THANK YOU! The many opportunities that I have experienced as the fair ambassador are unending. Whether it be the OAAS Convention, CNE Competition or any other events at the fair, each one of them has offered me many new learning experiences. I look forward to welcoming everyone to the fair in September to celebrate agriculture and our community while exploring this year’s theme of “Wheeling, Dealing, and Farm Biz.” See you at the fair!
